Carl Hiaasen was listed at 17 thanks to his savagely funny and addictive crime novels which have reached a vast audience.<br>
I've always enjoyed reading his books, being one of the few American crime writers that I really like.

In response to:James Lee Burke is One of the Best Around

Until I read your website I had never heard of James Lee Burke. It's been so long. My mother read to me before I was born and all during my childhood. When the weather was bad, our family would sit around the living room and read Shakespeare plays, so that by the age of 12 I had been through all of the Bard's stories. The advantages of being read to as a child cannot be overemphasized and it's great to know that people still do so.

In response to:Reading is Fundamental

I totally agree. Some of my favorite memories are my parents reading to me every night before I went to bed. I still remember some of these books by heart. My wife and I carry on this tradition today with our children, reading to them every night. As the kids get older I am enjoying getting into some more interesting books; we just finished Little House in the Big Woods. I may have been more excited about the details than my kids, but they listened intently every time we read it.
